Why We Think Music Videos are Important (And Fun to Make)
Although the glory days of MTV music videos with enormous budgets and glitz galore are pretty much over save for the Top 40s of the world, the Music Video doesn't have to die – and it shouldn't. Yes, budgets are getting smaller and yes, viewing platforms are changing, but a music video is still a solid way to attract new audiences and maybe even more importantly, tell your story.
We think a music video is an especially useful tool for emerging artists, as it's an opportunity to introduce audiences to both your music and you. In our opinion, you are just as important as the sound, especially as social media continues to grow and our personalities are always present. With platforms like Instagram where artists are able to constantly engage with followers through posts and stories, personalities attract audiences just as much as the music does. A music video will showcase your style and persona while promoting your music – it's the perfect marketing tool.
As storytellers, we like music videos because they are great exercises in short form storytelling, but what’s even more fun is that they have no rules. Want to be abstract with no storyline? Totally doable. Want to make it a 20 minute short film with scenes of dialogue surrounding the track itself? Also totally doable. As an artist, a music video allows you to push limits visually, adding image to the voice and brand you have already built.
Music videos also make us a little nostalgic because many of our team members got their starts in the music video world. Our founders Megan and Tom actually met on the set of one (see below)!
So, if you are an artist looking to share your brand with the world we strongly suggest you consider a music video. And if you are not an artist and just reading this blog post because it sounded interesting, we strongly suggest you go watch one because regardless how simple, complex, narratively driven or conceptual, music videos are always unique – just like the artists who make them.
